Overview

The Franciscan tradition follows the way of St. Francis — radical poverty, joy, humility, and profound love for all of God's creation. It emphasizes Gospel simplicity and fraternity.

History

Francis of Assisi renounced his inheritance in 1209 and founded the Order of Friars Minor. The Franciscan family grew to include the Poor Clares and the Third Order.

Mission

To follow Christ in poverty, humility, and love, renewing the Church and the world through Gospel simplicity and joy.

Vision of Holiness

Holiness is joyful poverty, radical dependence on God, and seeing every creature as a brother or sister in the great family of creation.

Prayer Life

Prayer is simple, heartfelt, and often outdoors. Francis composed the Canticle of the Creatures. The breviary and the Mass are central.

Marian Devotion

Francis had a tender devotion to Mary. He built a chapel in honor of her at Portiuncula and encouraged the Hail Mary prayer.
